“Extending the ‘Last Call’ time would be up to the individual businesses, and would be a huge boom, for modernization of our state’s alcohol policy. Not only would clubs, bars, and restaurants have more flexibility, but consumers would also have a bigger range of options to choose from, and that could finally provide an incentive to lawmakers to update our state’s antiquated alcohol laws. “Bringing North Carolina into the 21st Century when it comes to alcohol policy should be a priority for state legislators, and that is something that should be embraced for all North Carolina residents, not just when the RNC comes to Charlotte,” Yaël Ossowski, deputy director of the Consumer Choice Center said.

Last Call can vary from state to state with the earliest being 12 a.m. to as late as 5 a.m. In New York, Last Call is 4 a.m. On Saturdays and special occasions, Last Call in Chicago is also 4 a.m. In Texas and Virginia, Last Call is 2 a.m., per city-data.com.

According to Ossowski, “if any establishment is caught selling alcohol after 2 a.m. after this provision expires in August 2020, they will face immediate and severe penalties from the Alcohol Law Enforcement division of the state of North Carolina. That could mean fines, revoking of the premise’s alcohol license, or even a complete shutting down of the business.”
